My Approach to Therapy

My name is Sara York, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Play Therapist, specializing in Children's Mental Health; located in Bellevue Washington.  I enjoy working closely with families to help them reach their goals. My approach to therapy is to view your family and your child's problem in the context of their life and relationships. I take a family system's approach, which is client centered and focused on the goals you bring to therapy. Taking a comprehensive approach, I develop a treatment plan, taking into consideration family history, physical health, educational goals/needs, living situation, and any other cultural aspects of your life. I encourage clients to work with their family and/or supports throughout the therapeutic process. I use a variety of therapeutic models and enjoy working with children of all ages and families from all backgrounds. I am an LGBTQ and Gender Non-Conforming safe space and will create a positive atmosphere for you and your child.

Children

Play Therapy can help kids develop problem-solving skills and also teach them the value of seeking help. As a Registered Play Therapist, I can help your child cope with stress and a variety of emotional and behavioral issues. Many kids need help dealing with school stress, such as homework, test anxiety, bullying, depression, ADHD, behavioral problems, or peer pressure.

Teens

Teenagers are under a great deal of stress and are often silenced by their many social and family pressures. Providing teens with the opportunity to take part in their own counseling allows them to further develop skills which promote independence. I can help your teen improve their overall functioning at home, school, within the family, and with peers/social environment.

Parents & Families

Sometimes parents need guidance/support/new ideas for parenting strategies, working with the school on an academic issue, working with other parents in the community to assure that their child is safe (among other things). I will work with parents and families to help them better understand challenges they are seeing in their families and/or having while parenting.

LGBTQ

Regardless if you seek therapy for issues related to your LGBTQ status or not, it is imperative you feel supported and able to speak freely in order to benefit from the therapeutic experience. This is especially true for those confronted with the double stigma of mental health issues and an LGBTQ orientation. I offer a safe and compassionate space to discuss issues with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, development and transitions.
